Unhappy 9700 + Google Enhanced Gmail Plug-in

Please Login to Remove!

Hi there,

Just wanted to find out if anyone is having any issues with the Gmail enhanced plugin and any software higher than: 9700M_PBr5.0.0_rel554_PL5.1.0.98_A5.0.0.351

This is the latest official software by T-Mobile UK and it works with the plug-in fine on my handset, but the OS is realllllly realllly slow ... my Bold works much better on the newer OS's, but then the plug-in doesn't seem to work properly (will show working, but things like updating label lists doesn't work)

Has anyone else noticed this? has anyone got the plugin working on a slightly newer build of the software (even if it's not the newest, as long as it speeds up my Bold)?

Cheers

The I put the current "official" release (at the top of this forum) in my unlocked/Carphone Warehouse 9700. I'm on the TM-UK network, and it works fine. That release seems to have the plugin built in. Before I realised, I downloaded the GMail plugin and my BB offered to downgrade it! It seems the built-in plugin is not yet available as a download. By BB does NOT show the plugin in the apps list, but it is there. If I look in the modules of the 5.0.0 'core apps' there is a "net_rim_bb_gmail" module at version 2.0.0.30. That may be it.

So maybe try that release? Seems to work fine here...

Cheers Wibbly,

Can you check something for me though? (this is wherer i found out that the OS 5.0.0.680/5.0.0.423 to be faulty with the plug in) ... can you log into your gmail on the web, create a label, then refresh the labels on your blackberry and see if they're all there?

this is where i noticed that something was fishy .... before i added a couple of new labels I was using the OS 5.0.0.680/5.0.0.423 and had the gmail plug in 2.0.0.30 and i thought everything was working ok, but I only noticed that it wasn't when it wouldn't refresh the label folder list.

I don't use labels much. At the BB end it doesn't seem show any custom labels not attempt to get them when I try and refresh. So a bug...

Yeah, looks like it,

I can't tell if it's the OS version I'm using or the Plugin version I'm using .... if anyone else is reading this thread could you please check out your handsets?
I'm on:
OS: 9700M_PBr5.0.0_rel554_PL5.1.0.98_A5.0.0.351
Plugin: 2.0.0.25

Please see if you can reproduce the failure of labels refreshing, or whether you're using a newer version of the OS and the plugin works fine

Cheers

Default Google. mail blows

I use the plug-in (and it's sorta 'OK') because one of my main work contacts uses googlemail and google groups exclusively.

I , personally, hate the google threaded/discussion based email. My plugin works OK but I make sure I don't miss email (and the occasionally do) by forwarding all G- mail to a Yahoo account but leave a copy on the google server. I end up with two emails from google and yahoo sometimes but it makes sure I get the email on the phone.

Google also does not allow emailing yourself by cc or bcc from your phone. RIM acknowledges that this is a Google issue and not a RIM issue. Google doesn't like people emailing themselves from the phone (or a BB to be specific)...I, myself, like to cc; myself on occasion though.

But the plug in works as well as g-mail does in any case (which is just "OK" to me ).

I guess I'm just slow - I have the plugin installed and I don't see anything going on with my gmail accounts. I even tried deleting one and readding - and that did nothing but lose all the mail from that account that was on my phone - luckily it was a low volume mailbox.

What am I doing wrong here? Why can't I see the "plugin" options

hi antb,
That info is actually quite valuable, the issue you're having is the issue i had once i'd upgraded to the .423 OS, it automatically updates the gmail plugin to .30 from .25 that i'm using right now.
(I thought I was the only one getting this problem)
I'm gonna try upgrading the OS to the .423 Os and see if i can keep the .25 version of the gmail pluggin working ... still trying to get my head around whether this is a plugin issue or an OS issue.

**Anyone reading this thread, any input would be greatly appriciated**

Hi,
Just tried this and the plugin works as expected.
All labels are updated and mail sync in both directions works.

Hey Toffe,
Can you let us know which version of the gmail plugin you are using, and could you check that if you now add a label to your gmail and update the labels on your blackberry, does it update successfully.

I have .423 as well and have the same problem. I can't seem to get v 2.0.0.30 of the plug-in, just v 2.0.0.25. I have deleted and reinstalled several times with the same result. How is everyone getting v. 2.0.0.30 of the plug in? Could someone please post the file? Thanks.

mine installed itself when I had it connected to desktop manager, it searches on line for new software and then gives you the update for the plugin

Sucess!
I've Fixed it! ... found a crazy and extreme way of doing it, but I am now running the .423 OS with the gmail .30 Plugin, steps are below:

1.) Backup your handset using desktop manager.
2.) Make a list of all your apps, and maybe note down where you got them from (OTA URLS/App World/Desktop Install URL's)
3.) Dis-associate your Gmail account from whichever BIS system you use
4.) Remove your Sim and Memory Card from your blackberry and switch it back on so it turns on in offline mode.
5.) Wipe your handheld (Options-> Security Options-> Security Wipe-> tick both of the top boxes and wipe your blackberry clean)
6.) upgrade to the newest OS (.423) in the usual manner.
7.) insert your sim, refresh your host routing tables, and bring down all of your service books again.
8.) re-add your Gmail account (this time the message you get for installing the plugin will download the .30 version)
9.) reload your backup and re-install your apps from scratch

Yes ... this is a very long method (took me about 2 hours), and you will loose and blackberry messenger conversations and any messages in your facebook programme etc. ... but my blackberry bold 9700 is now working amazingly fast, and the gmail plugin is working brilliantely!

So basically - wipe the device and reinstall everything for gmail to work properly?

Thanks for the info - but I think I'll wait until they release an update that doesn't require me formatting my device for a plugin to work lol

You're absolutely right, it was an extreme measure .... But (and I'm sure many will agree) Google do some amazing products, but they can really take the biscuit with updates and compatibility sometimes.
Blackberry updates come out every 5 seconds, and with some handsets, every official update makes your handset a bit better, but Google sometimes don't keep up with the game.

Yeah - exactly. I like google's apps for the most part.. When they're solid they're solid. What's odd with this is that I can see the "options" menu for the gmail plugin and set how many convo lines - but that's all I see in relation to it
