While EDGE is required for data, it's still capable of carrying voice.

here we go:

think like...GPRS = dialup... EDGE = DSL
Well, not really...

I will say Edge = Slow DSL

It definitely is faster than dail up though.

From what I understand (and I think I have a very good grasp of things) that's not true...EDGE is NOT a voice channel, it's strictly data, EDGE simply works in accord with GSM in order to deliver voice....

GPRS devices can have single mode (only GPRS/EGPRS) or dual mode (both GSM voice and GPRS data) capability. The GPRS system was modified using EDGE technology to increase the 171.2 kbps GPRS maximum data transmission rate to 474 kbps EGPRS data transmission rate.
Though it's been a while since I've worked strickly wireless communications, it goes something like this. While GPRS/EDGE are typically used for data only, they can be used for voice. But since GPRS/EDGE transmissions travel on modified GSM carriers, techincally you are both right?

I don't think voice travels over GPRS, but with the higher speeds of EDGE you can get more options for voice communications over the EDGE network, which is basically a software upgrade running on top of the GSM network... if I understand it right.

Read this thread with interest. I've got a 7100, on Cingular, with BB data plan. I have NEVER seen EDGE on the unit, only GPRS. I'm in a metro area where EDGE should be strong. Can anyone give me a clue as to what's up? Thanks

I don't think the 7100 supports EDGE, I may be wrong....

I have a 7130c on Cingular.. It switches less now that I upgraded to the cingular 3g sim card.
(Not that the 7130c is 3g) BUT 3g sim cards will allow you to see more towers and it's locks to one much faster than the older cards. Now the only real problem that I have is the ability to hear callers clearly when I am in a crowded semi noisy room. It's REALLY hard to hear folks if there is much noise. anyone else notice this.? (This was NOT a problem on any other NON blackberry phones that I have owned.)
