I have a new Curve and I have a preinstalled theme that shows my calendar events on the home screen. But my tasks which I can see in the calendar app do not show on the home screen. Do I need a custom theme to glimpse my tasks due on home screen or do I have something configured wrong?

Nothing wrong, Tasks won't show on the homescreen. That functionality is not part of the OS. No amount of theme tweaking will make it happen.

That's unfortunate. I was hoping that maybe I could create my own theme to do that. I don't know about others but I find the call log on the home screen to be much less important than a task list so I'd rather get rid of that in favor of a task list. At the very least having some kind of nag icon like on the iPhone / iPod Touch that lists the number of due tasks would be nice.

I'd suggest using the keyboard shortcut "T" for Tasks. Open Tel-App > Options > General Options > "Dial from Home Screen" set to "No".
That way, instead of having the tasks cover your screen, you press one button "t" and you get to the whole package.
