have faith.,
why would rim go with an evdo chipset for nothing? that evdo chip costs a fortune to license from qualcomm -- otherwise they wouldve just got a faster 1x chip.

datadump,
That's not necessarily true.
(1) The EV-DO chipset has much better plain 1X CDMA performance with less overhead than other 1X chips.
(remember our least-favourite model 7750 DOGberry? YUCK!)
(2) The EV-DO chipset isn't that much more expensive. There are other cost premiums in a BlackBerry that are much bigger.
(3) For the smaller market of CDMA networks, BlackBerry models are not updated very often. RIM is being very forward-thinking, because EV-DO may be implemented in the future, at least on some carriers such as Bell Mobility. They are obviously ensuring that the model 7250 is a durable model.

:) wb interesting to go back to various postings
and news pieces to see where that rumor started that became fact about ev-do functioning. all the vzn techs i talked to last week when i activated my 7250 genuinely sounded surprised. they hadn't even heard the rumor that many of us users took as fact. no matter to me, no ev-do in bay area, and browsing on a tiny screen is like watching tv thru a keyhole. though skype wb nice....

Ordered the 7250 through direct fulfillment for the $349 two year commitment price, then the Verizon Wireless press release hit the streets saying that if you buy the device in one of their stores or sponsoring stores (Best Buy, Circuit City etc.) that you will get an additional instant rebate of $100.
Am on the phone with customer service, which is always a treat, and of course they are unaware even of the press release. When I directed her to her own website, she read it and said she thought that was only for a new subscription. I told her to read it again, because that's not what it says. She put me on hold, which always seems to happen. In the meantime, has anyone received this rebate that is an existing BB user?

This is a big FYI for those purchasing their BB7250 through Direct Fulfillment. Had I not called, I would have been charged the $349 price. After I brought their attention to their own press release, they gave me the rebate that should appear as a credit. My resultant price should be $249. That's a darn good deal, especially when I think how much I paid for the much slower 7750.

Here is the press release. The deal is spelled out in the last two paragraphs before "About Verizon Wireless".

Good luck.

The used the words "...Bluetooth compatibility..." which may be a reference to serial profiles and Bluetooth Modem (which would make the Fool article a true one in that respect) but it's way too vague. So it could just as easily be considered an error.

My reference for Fool was just more about the websites name than anything else.

Bluetooth question re car hands-free kit
Does anyone know if the new Verizon Blackberry 7250 can export its phonebook (contacts list) via bluetooth, allowing transmission of its phonebook numbers to a car's bluetooth hands-free kit? More specifically, is there any knowledge about whether the 7250 supports the Bluetooth OBEX and/or OPP profiles? I ask because Verizon sells a bluetooth phone (Motorola v710) that has these profiles disabled, making it impossible to export the phone numbers, and I'm worried they may have similarly limited the bluetooth functionality of the blackberry. Thanks.

Doug in VA,
Unfortunately, that's true.
RIM did that for security purposes.
The biggest customer of BlackBerry is the government.
The government doesn't want Bluetooth to leak addresses.
Even the 7100 can do it if RIM enables the software for it, but RIM has intentionally disabled the OBEX/OPP stuff.
From several sources, I heard that a limited opening-up of the Bluetooth stack will likely happen late in 2005, with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server option to cripple the Bluetooth stack (perhaps by default).

This reminds me of the many posts our GSM users made for the 7290 regarding this bluetooth disappointment. Does anyone know of a good hack to enable OBEX/OPP/DUN? Everything can be hacked, it just takes someone to figure it out. So who's our beloved brain this time?

RIM encrypted everything in the BlackBerry out of the wazoo -- I think it's a little harder to crack than an X-Box. (It took a long time before someone figured out how to run Linux on an unmodified X-Box)
But it's not impossible. Who knows...

in ezmove, you should see both the 39.99 voice plan (i did notice this was available in san francisco but not boston or new york) and ability to select the 7250 for 349 with a 2 year plan.
happy thumbing!

The only reason you see it is because they've directed you to the b2b website. Notice the web address: http://business.verizonwireless.com/...DataName=PHONE
Right now the phone is only sold to businesses, or at least that is what 2 reps and a superviser told me from Verizon earlier this week. However, the Press Release does seem to indicate a more general release tomorrow. I'd be curious if anyone used the b2b site to get the phone that is not a business customer.
