You have to contact your cellular carrier to increase the number of rings before going to voicemail. As far as the volume goes, I have heard that upgrading the OS to some of the newer builds fixed this problem.

Upgrade your OS to Bharti. It's so damn loud now all my tunes/ringers are on low, anything above that hurts my ears.

There are some threads with instructions on how to do it yourself, but I called Cingular (*611) was on hold for a minute or two, then asked the CS rep to change my RINGTIME to 30 seconds.

On your phone dial:

*61*+1XXXXXXXXXX*11*tt#

Where XXXXXXXXXX is your market's VM number and tt is the time in seconds you want the phone to ring for. I believe valid range is 1-30!

Remember to use the + right before your voicemail number. Do not input more than 30 seconds because you could have some problems of calls never reaching voice mail. Just type it in and hit send/call and you should get some sort of confirmation message. Then try it. I believe the default setting is 15 seconds.

I don't post often, (as you can tell), but I believe that I have discovered an unintended consequence of the instructions provided above.

I have a 8700c on Cingular, and am using the Bharti 4.1 OS. I entered the string exactly as instructed above to lengthen the time to 30 seconds. When testing, it appeared to work, but when the system eventually did pick up after 30 seconds, I received a generic Cingular voicemail message.

Upon further investigation on these boards (I know where the Search button is), it turns out that the *61* sequence is associated with turning on Call Forwarding on the Rogers system (and maybe others as well). Consequently, I had to disable the Call Forwarding in order to get my normal voicemail greeting back. In doing so, I also lost the 30 seconds lengthened ring time.

Bottom line: This didn't work for my phone configuration. If anyone has any tips or advice, please let me know. Thanks.

It's generally *61 on most any telephone network. But if you don't know it, just call your carrier and have them change it.

Is there a way of quickly blocking my number from being displayed for only one call. The only way I have found is to change it in the settings but that's not convenient for just the occassional call I want to block display on.

What OS does the 8700g come with by default?

Why would you need to extend the number of rings? Does this mean when someone calls they can hear the ringing tone up to 30 times before voicemail? What is a good number for this setting, right now my t-mobile defaults to 5. Also this means your ringtone plays longer...

Question I also received the "call forwarding message"

Hi All,

I followed the directions as well - exactly as written. I received a message on my screen (nothing from the voice) - 8700c - that there was no reply and I received a
call forwarding message. FYI - v 4.1.0.194.

Great idea to change to 30 seconds. Any further information available?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you don't upgrade place a call to anyone it doesnt matter, then activate speakerphone, crank the volume to the max and then end the call. This should fix the ringtone volume issue.....
