Default CONFIRMED: GPS unlocked on Verizon Tour

Please Login to Remove!

I am very happy to report that after waiting way too many years for Verizon to get their act together and unlock the GPS on their Blackberry's, my new Tour is getting a GPS lock with Google Maps, Telenav, Poynt. Of course, when you ask Verizon reps if the GPS is unlocked, they have no clue (as usual).

I'm going to try several other applications, but wanted to at least get a thread started for people to report what works/doesn't work. Beyond411 isn't working for me w/ GPS, but I think that might be the application, not the phone/GPS.

I think the GPS is locked on my Tour, I see the blue dot surrounded by a light blue circle. According to Google, this indicates that Google Maps is not using GPS.

I believe I have all the correct settings necessary for Google Maps to use the GPS:
GPS Services = Location On
Google Maps (v. 3.0.2) permissions = Allow for all 3 options (Connections, Interactions, & User Data)

Also, BlackBerry Maps gets stuck on 'Searching for satellites...' when I select 'Find Location' > 'Where I Am'. This also has permission to all 3 options.

1 more thing, VZ Navigator is working without a problem.

Are there any other settings I need to change?

Could there be a conflict with VZ Navigator?

Are you outside and give it some time. The gps takes some time the first time to find you.

Don't give VZW too much credit. If they had more control over the firmware (and not RIM), I don't think this would be the case.

Knowing that it was unlocked on the Storm, and being the fun-loving guy I am who will use anything as an excuse to F with VZW employees, I asked them "Is the GPS unlocked on the tour?" and I was told "If you sign up for VZNav, it will unlock the GPS for other apps too"... "Oooh, thanks, I'll keep that in mind" I told him. Needless to say, I didn't sign up for NZNav.

Yes, it's unlocked in the Tour and works really well -- I leave my location on (vs. 911 only) and Google Maps locks me at 2-4 meters almost immediately.

Unhappy Suddenly not able to communicate with GPS on Tour

For the past week I have not been able to use Google Maps or BB Maps with GPS on my Tour. Neither app can find the satellites and provide my location. Google Maps used to work on this phone. All settings look correct.

Google Maps just provides my location with ~1000 meters, and BB Maps get stuck on Searching for Satellites.

Any suggestions?

Fixed it! Shutdown, took the batter out, replaced it, waited for the reboot. Voila. Apps can now use the GPS again. Lovely. Smartphones are becoming more and more like laptops every day. Sigh.

Yea, GPS is unlocked. I guess I thought this was common knowledge.
I use google maps on occasion and roadrunnerGPS with no problems.

Its called a tour... and it's supposedly a "world phone"... so i figured if they left the gps all jacked up i'd have to find someone at headquarters and punch them.... but i'd probably miss by about 3400 meters :(

Guess I'm missing something in this reply.

Also, to anyone using Google Maps, I would highly recommend an upgrade to 3.2.1, which is the version I have from about 2 weeks ago. On 3.0.x, it used to take a very long time for the GPS to kick in, now it finds me on GPS faster than it can load the map around me. Also, they've added public transit for directions and better GPS Navigation style. Now when you are driving a route, it tells you "ETA xx min" so you know when you'll get there. It's about as accurate as my car GPS.
