The BB data plan is seperate from your voice plan. So someone with an old voice plan can add data features to it without changing their voice plan to a current one.

You do need a data plan to use the email and data features of the bb.

GPS will be free and can be used with beyond411, google maps, infospace findit, bbmaps, mapquest navigator etc at no charge.

If you would like to use Sprint Navigation or Telenav and have access to the additional features they offer (like turn by turn voice directions) you will need to pay the monthly charge for that service.
