Default Ecosystem

I really don't like it when the word ecosystem is used when discussing cellular phones. For instance:

Both the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 and Apple iOS platforms are exclusively designed and optimized to run on very specific hardware configurations which results in a more controlled ecosystem (fragmentation virtually nonexistent), easier deployment of firmware updates and a more stable mobile computing experience.

What?!

Ecosystem is properly defined as "a system formed by the interaction of a community of living organisms with their environment".

Makes no sense to me.

Ok, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Wrong.

The definition of an ecosystem includes the interaction of a community of living organisms and the non-living factors and elements in the environment.

Not wrong. There are various definitions, all having to do with living organisms and biology. Define it how you will, the word ecosystem has nothing to do with handheld operating systems.

The definition I saw with this verbiage referred to soil, minerals, water and sun light. That didn't include electronic devices or operating system platforms.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecosystem.

Actually it was this.

Thank you Daphne, for posting additional definitions. It just seems so out of place to hear someone talking about an ecosystem while discussing technology and phones. Anyway, it's nothing more than a pet peeve of mine as I work in biology, and seemed to fit well here in the Rants and Raves directory.

Carry on.

I have used the word, but I see what you're saying. I'll have to think on a good synonym.

You may not have to dc, as it seems to be getting commonly accepted, oddly enough.

The usage of the concept of digital ecosystem has been around for over a decade.

News to me. I've only seen this usage within the last year or so.

eco-, a prefix mostly relating to ecological or environmental terms.

Again, not a big deal. I just don't like it.

It's a bastardization of the English language - I don't much like it either. But, as my friend who is an English professor might say, it's part of the evolution of the language.

"Apps". That's the definition of a digital ecosystem. Lots and lots of apps.

I would vote for non-intellegent design myself.
