Default Rim & Hsdpa (3g)

Please Login to Remove!

Will RIM ever get on the ball by competing with other manufacturers by offering a 3G Blackberry? After all there are HSDPA smartphones already sold on wireless carrier networks like the HTC TYTN. Then there's the recent leak about Apple soon to be releasing a second version of the iPhone with 3G support MacNN | 3G, 16GB iPhone for Europe in November? While RIM continues to release one model after another with little features enhancements. A good example of this is the Curve 8300 (camera, no WIFI, no GPS), 8310 (camera, GPS, no WIFI), etc. Why not have a true "all-in-one" smartphone device instead of giving us some features here then other features there?

There is a rumored 3G device on the horizon, but AFAIK, nothing has been confirmed. I have heard late 2007 or early 2008, but in reality, your guess is as good as mine.

As for an "all in one" device, remember who the primary RIM customer is - government and business. Many of these customers do not allow cameras into their facilities. So a solution with one is not something they will buy or deploy. Also, security is paramount in selecting a device. Many in the community, me included, question the security of public WiFi connections. If you have WiFi you will use where ever you are, and you can't really lock it down. A BB on a public WiFi network is not secure, IMHO.

And as for the speed of a 3G device, I am not so sure it will be all that everyone wishes or thinks it will be. Email will arrive as it always does. 3G won't really affect it. Surfing might be marginally faster, but probably not worth the increased cost or decreased battery life associated with 3G. Most web sites aren't optimized for mobile viewing and handhelds truly lack the processor horsepower, memory, and available screen real estate to load and view websites as one can on a PC. Where you will see a gain is if you use it to tether. (NOTE: I used a Cingular Blackjack for a few months before returning to the BB, so I have been there and doen that with 3G)

And lastly, battery life on a 3G device is terrible, especially if you are in a fringe area where the device is constantly searching and going in and out of 3G mode.

RIM develops and builds devices based on carrier requests/specs. Maybe you should point your question towards AT&T.

Sort of. 3G in Europe. Also works in Japan. GPRS only in the US.

According to his location - Vancouver, BC, I assumed he/she was more concerned with North America than elsewhere. Maybe a wrong assumption on my part, but it is what it is. Don't be so sensitive.

Then there's the 8703e, 7130e, and 8830. The 7250 could also be flashed to use EvDO, which IS 3G. The thread however is about HSDPA

The fact is there just isn't that large a market for North American HSDPA yet.

The point of the matter is that there are manufacturers selling 3G smartphones to cellular carriers in North America, not just overseas where as RIM still continues to drag it's customers along with little updates to the hardware. As pointed out in my original post an example of this is the HTC TYTN currently sold on Rogers Wireless network here in Canada where the device supports all three 3G frequencies to give the user global access to HSDPA/UMTS on their GSM device while traveling. A problem for some people that are not familiar with the technology is that the assumption is that 3G can only be used for email and downloads like games, photos, etc. 3G is better at supporting video calling functionality which is becoming more prevalent with carriers that are offering 3G network service. This may not be a useful funtion for some but it would be for those that would like to video conference either with clients or their coworkers while away from the office. Also mobile TV would play at the correct frame rate instead of the typical 15 frames per second that some carriers try to squeeze over EDGE.
