I was wondering, I have a 9000 and my friend has just got the 9700, which I notice has quite a nice interface for calendar and messaging. Is this specific to the 9700 or can I upgrade my 9000 OS and have the same? Andy.

You can instsll any OS version from any carrier/service provider for your model. I can't say if you can get the features you are interested in with a newer OS version; but you cannot install the OS for another model on your blackberry.

Right, that makes sense. So my next question...what is the lastest 9000 OS and how do I find out what my OS version is. I'm presuming it's in the settings somewhere?

There are also a bunch of beta 5.0 os. You would get the threaded sms. Only thing is since it is beta you
run the risk of messin up your phone. I upgraded to 5.0.238 and I love it, havin had any problems except for I was missing the internet browser but I fix that and havnt looked back since

9700 is on ver5.0 while 9000 is on ver4.6 thus the differences in interfaces among other improvements. there is no official release of ver5.0 OS for 9000 ...... yet (I hope), but there are leaks of beta around.
