Unhappy Unlocked 8800 says "Call Failed"

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

Been reading this fantastic forum but I'm unable to find the answer to this issue.

I have an unlocked 8800 (Confirmed from one of your pages) and when I insert a SIM card, the blue arrows appear next to the antenna and after they disappear have got about 4 bars of strength with the carrier name showing. If I then initiate a call I just get a message saying "Call Failed" and thats all.

Has anyone been here before?

Graham.

Have you tried another SIM card? How did you unlock it?

I unlocked it using an unlock code purchased from ebay.

Hope this helps.

I take it the phone worked prior to the unlocking?

Are there any items enabled when you go to Options>Advanced Options>SIM Card and type (whilst holding alt) mepd ?

Default Unlocked 8800 says "Call Failed" Reply to Thread

Thnks for your reply Sytner.

I don't know if it worked previously as it was given to me.

If I use the MEPD says everything is disabled.

Hope this helps.

Does the device has any sort of operator branding on it? If it does would there be a chance that you could get a sim for that operator and try that?

It was originally T-Mobile (UK) and that's confirmed by the splash screen.

Have you tried resending the Service Books? Worth a shot...

Thanks ndub33 for your reply.

I'm not sure what you mean. How do you do this?

Service books won't matter trying to make a call. Even with no service books an unlocked BB should get voice and SMS, right?

Graham - who is your carrier?

Can you try a T-Mo SIM in the device and see if that works?

Yes an unlocked BlackBerry should make and receive calls regardless of wether they have a data plan or any service books.

I haven't got a T-Mo SIM to try now but when I did have one it still didn't work!

I have tried Tesco (UK) and Orange (UK) which don't work either. Strangely the Tesco SIM says EDGE but the Orange SIM says GPRS, not sure if this is related to not being able to make/receive calls or texts.

OK - if it says EDGE or GPRS and you can't make a call, it sounds like the 8800 has an "IT Policy" on it from the previous owner which is disabling dialing.

Go to BlackBerry FAQ - BlackBerryFAQ and look for the threads on "Remove IT Policy".

I have already used JL_Cmder's "resettofactory" command to remove ALL IT policies and none are showing in Options/Security screen.

My take:

If you have removed the IT Policies, and it is showing GPRS or EDGE, and it is unlocked and is STILL can't make a call, then the device is damaged.

Confirm at Options > Security > General Settings > **services** there is no named IT Policy.

The difference between it saying EDGE and GPRS on the separate is just the coverage of the two providers differentiating.

I forgot to mention earlier in this thread that I have actually received texts from T-Mob about settings but couldn't reply, it just timed out.

There are no IT policies. (See Yesterday, 07:47 PM)
