calling from UK to Italy

Hi, sorry to be so brainless. I am leaving for the UK and have a UK sim for travelling. I will need to be in touch with a friend who has a TIM italy mobile. I know I have to dial +39 and the number, but, someone told me that you dial a 0 before the phone number. example: +44 0123 4567 123. That seems to be too many numbers. Do I drop the zero? sorry to ask this, but, never used my BB 8300 in europe before.
