Default Term Limits: Yes or No

What's your opinion on term limits. I have yes for a multitude of reasons, one to help weaken the lobbyists relationships with so much turnover in government, and also to get rid of the concept of career politicians. I figure I will keep it short on the reasonings.

As far as the limits, I would limit Senate to 1 term and the House to 1 term, maybe 2 since it's 2 years. They could have the option to run for house after the Senate term runs out and vice versa. I would prefer the longest anyone could stay would be 8 years, similar to the president, so it would have to be 1 Senate and 1 House term for me. (I know they aren't going to change the 6 to 4, so that scenario is it).

And in my own personal dream world of things that would never happen, I would have it where they couldn't be a lobbyist for 8 years after their term.

Yes!

Some of those dinosaurs have been there since the beginning of time... Things have changed since the cavemen needed more wood to cook their Tyrannosaurus Rex on...

Yup. Too many out of touch career politicians. Not a healthy thing.

In the abstract I like the idea of frequent turnover. The practical considerations suggest that you might get a different form of gridlock deriving from inability to manipulate the system effectively.

Not a fan. I change office jobs every year or so as well as most of my peers. This means just as we are getting really good at what we are doing and developing a system we move. Same thing would happen with the politicians.

thats why you do it with politicians. when they get comfortable is when they get corrupt or loose touch with their constituents. in my opinion.

a yearly change is different from a 4 year set limit in washington. After 4 years in washington they have done all the damamge they can do. I mean look at Kennedy he gets re elected year after year just because of who he is. What has he really done lately?

Not so sure about term limits. From what I've seen here in FL, we elect green politicians and then kick them out just after they learn how to do the job. Some of these people are very talented and it's a shame to lose them so soon after they're trained.

either way you get into trouble. when you impose term limits, you force the good ones out too early, and when there are none, you get incumbents like feinstein and boxer who have been around so long that they have nothing to fear with respect to their constituency because no rookies stand a chance against them. same thing happened with the presidency - looking back i think people would have loved clinton for a few more years, and are thrilled that bush was forced to leave.

Personally, I would rather force a few good ones out early over keeping decades old, out of touch people having too many ties with special interests and lobbyists that affect their decisions.
