I dont think there is really any tips... It comes naturally... either people have it or dont.... And the more you type, the faster you will become. It's like typing on a computer. Maybe learn some shortcuts as well?

I use the slide out keypad instead of the touch screen. I can go much faster and make fewer errors with it, but then IMHO, you don't have one of these devices to become a touch typist.

I go back and forth among the three keyboards (I use the suretype keyboard on portrait) and it really depends how much I have to type. Plus I have a ton of shortcuts set up in AutoText. "t" for The, "ru" for Are you, etc.

YEP... Autotext shortcuts for all sorts of mail. I have one shortcut that produces a page and a half email! Also, albeit I never thought I would, I am getting along somewhat with the portrate keyboard in Suretype mode ..

Great.

Agreed. I use "ty" for thank you, "l" for love, "d" for "dear", "sy" for sincerely yours, just to name a few.

PRACTICE - When I got my Torch, I would rarely use the touchscreen for typing purposes. However, I'm now realizing that the more I use it (in landscape mode) the quicker my typing skills are becoming in terms of accuracy.

The great thing is, ... it doesn't take much practice before the results become noticeable.

Switching between 4 potential input methods will definitely slow down your learning. Unfortunately, you'll probably find you like at least 2 or 3 depending on what you're typing (or typing into).

Once Swype (or a substitute) hits BB, even the physical keyboard will likely find few new converts. It's simultaneously fast and forgiving. Even as a touch typist and former BB keyboard lover (8820 forever!), I'm faster on Swype after just a couple of days. It still has one major drawback inherent to all virtual keyboards - it covers part of the screen, possibly leaving you with less visible screen (non-keyboard area) than a traditional BB 2.4" screen. Luckily I'm rocking the Swype on a 5" screen, so there's plenty of real estate to go around!

I do a mixture of on screen typing and physical keyboard; as already mentioned it depends on how much I need to type which keyboard I will use. I am actually getting quite fast with the on screen and find the touch precision quite good. I love having the option as it wll cut down on unnecessary wear and tear.

As for the OP's request for tips ....... Learn the shortcuts, AutoText is your friend (if you use it) ....... and practice, practice, practice.

Maybe its just me, but I find the slide out faster. Especially if on a bus, etc where there is a little movement.
