Default Blackberry unlocking by TMO

Please Login to Remove!

Does anyone know how often TMobile will unlock a Blackberry unit for existing customer?

Tmobile will generally unlock any phone you ask them too as long as you've been a customer for at least 90 days, and are in good standing.

Just explain to them that you'er going to be traveling over seas and would like to use it while you're on your trip.

I believe you can only unlock one phone per phone number every 90 days.

My assumption was that each phone had it's own active simcard.

I believe it is true that they will only do one phone per active line every 90 days as well.

In which case I agree with you - as long as you've been an active customer for 90 days and are in good standing, they should unlock all your phones - assuming they have their own active SIM card.

Reason I asked. They unlocked one BB for me in beginning of March and I got a new BB since. I think my contract ends in July but not sure and I want to get my second unit unlocked before the contract expires since there is always a chance that I will leave TMO when the contract is up.

If the general consensus is that they will unlock a unit every 3 months, I should be fine. Let me know if anyone knows anything different.

BTW, if it is 90 days, anyone care to guess where the '90 days' come from?

You said you got a new BB since March. Did you buy it from them? If not, they won't unlock it. If you did, are you sure it didnt' extend your contract?

No, did not buy from TMO but it is a TMO labeled unit. Last time when they unlocked my unit, they did not even have my IMEI correct. I had to manually sent it to them. Since I did not obtain from TMO, I do not believe my contract would have been extended.

Are you saying that TMO refuses to unlock any unit not purchased directly from them?

I didn't get my 7100t from TMO, I won it in a radio contest and TMO gave me the unlock code when I contacted them.

If the IMEI number isn't one of theirs orginally, I don't think they can/will. But if it is a branded as one of theirs, perhaps they will.

I am sure it is one of theirs. The unit is TMO branded and is currently locked to TMO. I am pretty sure they can unlock it but is just a matter of timing since they just did one for me in early March. I need to somehow convince them to unlock this other one before my contract ends.

Anyone has a suggestion if they won't do a second one after I wait the 90 days?

As long as it was originally purchased from T-Mobile, they can and will unlock it (even if you are not the original purchaser).

As people have said, you have to be a subscriber for 90 days, in good standing and not requested an unlock code in the past 90 days (not sure if it's per line/account/phone #/etc)

Now, one thing that I think you'll be interested in that not many people seem to know, T-Mobile also gives you a grace period AFTER you are no longer a T-Mobile subscriber. I can't remember if it's 60 or 90 days from cancellation tho. So even if you leave when your contract is up, you should still have at least 60 days to get past the previous 90 day request period.

Someone wanna call T-Mobile and verify this? or is a T-Mo rep and want to verify? Thx

I have the 7105t and 8700g from tmobile and a 7290 (TMO brand) second hand, they unlock all three, I even told them the 7290 is second hand and will be use as a back up, and they don't have a problem to unlock it.

DOH. Are you saying they unlocked all three for you at the same time? How did you pull that off? Did you just call the regular CS and they just submitted it and the unlock department just honnored it? I thought there was a one phone per request limit.

I purchase my 7105t in January, call them after the 14 days trial period and they unlock it, 3 months later, purchase a used 7290 and call them up right after I get the phone, told them the 7290 is for my backup and bought used and they unlock it, 2 weeks later, purchase the 8700g and after the 14 days trial period, call them up and they unlock it too.

All this call are Thur the regular customer service, I just tell them I will be traveling overseas and will be using the pre-paid sim card.

I am going to ask the stupid question....... What is the benefit of having the phone unlocked? How does the phone work after it has been unlocked?

It's not a stupid question - it has been asked and answered several times on the forum.

You unlock a phone (or BB) for two reasons: 1) You want to use it with a different carrier. You bought a Cingular locked BB and want to use it on T-Mobile. 2) You are traveling out of the US, and want to use another carriers SIM card in it to save phone charges. You won't have your e-mail, but voice will be much cheaper. I had mine unlocked so I can use it with foreign SIM cards in countries that don't offer BB services.

There you have it.

Here's another: I upgraded from a 6230 to an 8700g both TMO. NowI want to unlock the 6230 and give it someone who needs it for email. Will TMO do this and will it affect sevice on the 8700g. My assumption is yes they will, and no it won't cause problems. I would love it if someone confirmed that for me.
