Default Blackberry BES Server, Retrieve email from 6 months ago onto handset?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi Guys,

I am new on here, so Hello

I have a question i would like you input on... I was at an interview and got asked the following question but was not sure of the answer, here it is:

"We have a BES server installed managing all BB handsets, all different models, such as storm, pearl, bold, 9700 etc.
However i have a BB PEARL, this is synced to the BES server and i recieve emails, calendar fine. There is ONE email that i would like to view on my BB PEARL handset, that was sent to my Mailbox 1 year ago. Is this possible? And if so how? If not why?"

The answer cannot involve using third party s/ware such as google mail.

Any ideas how this could be done?

Cheers,

Mike.

The answer depends on the version of BES, and the version of the OS on the handheld.
If it's BES 4.1.5 or higher and OS 4.5 or higher on the handheld... then you can use the Remote Search capabilities and pull up any message that exists in the mailbox.

This will work on Exchange or Domino. If Domino, the mail database must be Full-Text Indexed first.

I'm assuming the message is still located somewhere in your mailbox or a subfolder and you can find it?? If so how about creating a single sub-folder, move the message to the sub-folder and then enable folder redirection for that single sub-folder...

Penguin - Great tip, You know, we once called RIM about that cause we had a VIP that was mad when we wiped his BB, he didn't have his old emails. When we called RIM they told us "The only way for him to see those emails on his BB again is to forward them all to himself, or something about getting into SQL and exchange to clear all mail stats so the BB will see all his mail as new.

Searching is much easier.

Penguin's answer also applies to GroupWise.

So as clarification, other than using the remote search (which is good for me), if I wipe and reactivate a BB, there is no way to send the old emails to it?

With BES 5.0.2 the have enhanced this somewhat:

"enhancements to activation and
prepopulation
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server includes the following enhancements to
activation:
xxx8226; The BlackBerry Messaging Agent now monitors the Junk folder as well as the
Inbox for activation messages.
xxx8226; You can now configure the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to prepopulate a
maximum count of 3000 email messages and a maximum message age of 30
days."

jjbova and CanuckBB,

There's a reg hack which will force pre-population every time -

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Research in Motion\Blackberry Enterprise Server\Agents\
ForceMsgPrepopDays - 14
ForceMsgPrepopMessages - 750
ForceMsgPrepopOnActivation - 1
Those are DWORD values and what I have mine set to. Also, I'm on Server 2008 64-bit, so the path reflects that (Wow6432Node).

Cool, I might have to try that....

This covers every user on the server, correct? Personally I don't really care, if the mail from that long ago is that important, they can forward it to themselves, or even call us to map the mailbox and resend it. But it is a neat idea, and I am sure will help someone out. Thanks JavaJunkee.

In 5.0.x you can set that in the server without doing a regedit
KB11632

Just a thought. And I don't believe this works for the issue that this thread started with. These are for new activations. We have users that drop their activation and don't get e-mails for 2-3 days. Then when we reactivate them, they don't always get the mail for that time.

Doesn't pre-population occur only if it is a new (different) device and not if it is re-activation of same device?

My understanding of pre-population with the reg hack, is that 'all' messages that fit the criteria (X number of messages or X number of days), will be sent to the device. Doesn't matter if the messages have or have not been sent prior.

I believe the setting that makes this happen is ForceMsgPrepopOnActivation - 1

http://www.blackberryforums.com/bes-...tml#post751856

One caveat I suppose, is if the user has moved the messages out of the InBox into a folder that is not being redirected, I would guess those messages will not be pre-populated.
