I have 2x bes 5.0.2 servers (all roles and also local sql 2008 server mirrored) in HA failover mode and all is working fine. I am running this as a VM on xenserver 5.6

I created a round robin DSN for the BAS console but as with some others I have got some issues accessing the BAS console using the RR DNS name.

i am currently still testing and when i take down one of the bes servers i cannot get access to the BAS via the RR DNS name.

it is driving me crazy and am wondering whether i am not better of just not bothering with BAS RR DNS and just logging to the BAS on the primary bes server and if that server is down to connect to bas on the backup bes server.

only a matter of changing 1 letter in the url.

or is it very important i use the BAS RR DNS method. if bes server 1 is down and i connect to bas console on bes server 2 any changes i make (which is not very often btw) will be written to the bes database (which could still be on the bes server 1 or 2 depending on which one is the active dbase and when bes 1 comes back up again i can use that console again? or am i missing something?

I did not have success with the DNS round robin. I'm sure it has more to do with me being a dummy, but I'm living with running the BAS off of the server that is up.

I have 2 instances, BES1a BES1b and BES2a BES2b. I also have a BES utility server that hosts BAS and Web Desktop Mgr.

Originally, I also tried the DNS round robin on the four BES HA servers with poor results. I've removed the round robin DNS entries and disabled BAS on the four HA servers. I now just run BAS on the utility server and it works great.

In the event my utility server goes down, I can just manually enable BAS on any of the four HA BES machines.

Actually BAS is the web replacement for the former BlackBerry Manager.


In the good BES 4.1 days, my BES configuration is like this:-

I had some issues with RR DNS but they were solved by using TCPPing instead of UDP.
Verify your BAS poolname under confg manager is exactly what you are using in your RR DNS entries.

Sometimes you need to turn off the client DNS caching. Because when one is down, it is still in the DNS cache for a while.

One thing you need to look at is the TTL for the DNS record.

btw the TTL change did the trick for me, now it works perfectly

On the PC where I'm attempting to access the BAS, I did a ipconfig /flushdns and then ipconfig /registerdns

Worked great. BAS opens quickly and cleanly.
