Default DST change also requires upgrade of desktop software?

Please Login to Remove!

Ok so I have a small 20 man BB deployment so I've decided I'll just email these 20 folks with the blackbery.com/dst2007 link and be done with it. I've got about 5 handhelds that have pre-4.0 OS on them so I'm going to grab those few in the next few days and upgrade them so I don't have to worry about the patch for older machines that was suppose to be released on Friday, but I don't believe is out yet.

However I'm trying to get the scoop on this page:

BlackBerry

because I'm having trouble following it. Am I to read correctly that it doesn't matter what desktop software is installed on the PC as long as the update date/time option is not checked?

Or should I just go ahead and install the 4.2 SP1 desktop software on all the users desktops?

You will never know if your users are going to do this:-

[x] Update device's date and time

or this:-

[ ] Update device's date and time

So upgrade the Desktop Manager to be safe.

Doesn't seem like anybody is talking much about this? Is this Desktop Software (Manager) upgrade really required for dst 2007?

Default It depends..

It depends on your environment. If you rely on the desktop manager to sync, then yes you will need it. Once you apply the Windows OS dst patch, it will have new registry entries. The previous BlackBerry Desktop Manager versions do not look for these new entries. Hence, the reg hack or the upgrade is required.

If your environment relies on the wireless sync and your redirector is set to enterprise and not desktop, then you won't need to bother.

Probably a more accurate answer is, if you depend on desktop mgr to sync AND when it sync you have the update system date/time box checked, then yes you need to use the new desktop mgr.

Hell even if you don't I suggest you install the new desktop mgr, the new switch handheld functionality is worth it just for how easy it makes to transition a user from and old handheld to a new one.

you do not need to update the desktop software if you are just doing the synchronization..
BlackBerry

If you do the auto update time, then yes...but otherwise no. BTW, auto update time is on by default.

I pushed out a registry change to make sure none of the DMs will sync (we're all wireless).

Yeah I know about the reg fix, but here's the thing Ekrimmer can you confirm that if someone manually hits the sync date/time checkbox that it does not overwrite the key you pushed out to the them? I haven't bothered experimenting with it because we are small enough with our handheld rollout that it was just easier to update the desktop software.

Not in my environment. "NO SOFTWARE FOR YOU!" is what i tell 'em. Everything we do is completely wireless.

Plus, our machines are so locked down, they probably couldn't install the Desktop software if they tried.
* Software & USB cable not given to users at the time of Blackberry deployment.* WIN XP Pro locked down to user level. (No Admins or Power Users unless a business justification presented to IT.)* LANDesk preventing unauthorized software installation.

We're not evil, just taking precautions. It's easier to support thousands of PCs if they are all the same and don't have SPYWARE on them.

thanks for the intriguing look into your dumb terminal environment. is it token ring? i think they were wanting to know about environments that have users that sync using the desktop software.

Thanks for your flame response. I'll be sure to file your constructive comments with the others under "O" for opfal.

I was providing a point-of-view as to WHY nobody was discussing the Desktop software update.
