Default How to do it right ? Changing BlackBerry phone and BES...

Please Login to Remove!

Hi there,

I'm about to change one blackberry phone (broken 8100 to a new one).
What is recommended proceeding ?

1. Wipe out the old phone (in the menu, or using BES server)
2. Set a new activation password in the BES server.
3. Run Enterprise activation on a new BB pohone.

Is this correct ?
We have a BES 4.0 server.

In this case (when I don't delete and re-add user on BES server, but only set a new activation password) I have one problem.
He will get only a brand new e-mails on his new phone.
But he will get all settings he had before (icons, ringtones...etc).

How to do it to restore him all the settings, but also to get to the new phone all e-mails he has received until now to his broken 8100 device. Something like prepopulation of his e-mails but only on this particular user to his new phone.

Thanks.

Start with step 2 - set the activation password on the BES, then activate the new device.

This will bring over all of this settings (including call logs) and the last 5 days worth of sent/received email (unless you've changed that setting on the BES).

Thanks.
As I can see on the BlackBerry Server Properties, the maximum of prepopulation for BES 4.0 is 350 messages, up to 7 days...is there any possibility how to set more ?

Not without a hack. I would not advise it.

You *could* do a backup of the current device and just restore the messages from the backup to the new device.

If you re-activate the user without doing a backup/restore, they will not get any of their previous emails on the device. That only works for an initial activation on the account

They will get them if you remove them from the BES first and clear all BB information from user mailbox, re-add and activate.

If you are changing one blackberry phone for a new one, message prepopulation WILL work. The only time that it does not work is if you are re-activating an existing BES user on a device with the same PIN as is shown for that user in BlackBerry Manager. As long as a different physical device is used, message pre-population will always work for existing users.

As stated, this is only true if you are reactivating on the same device. In this case, the original post stated that the 8100 was broken and being changed, as such message pre-population via EA will work as per server settings.

If the BB user wants ALL of the emails on the old 8100 on the new 8100, then yes you would need to faff about with a cabled partial backup/restore. In the interests of a clean setup tho, I would try to convince the user that the pre-pop will be sufficient as the device will soon fill up again.

TBH I don't really understand most users obsessions with attempting to get their entire mailfile on a BB. I never scroll back more than a few days on mine!

They will also lose all their backed up settings such as bookmark browsers, call logs, font settings, blah blah. IMO removing users from BES ought to be a "last resort"
