Exclamation UMA and WIFI was fine until...

Please Login to Remove!

My 8320 UMA was working perfectly for more than a year everyday in the office it would connect to my WIFI router and all my calls were UMA and fantastic, at home, and in every Starbucks it would connect and UMA calls were perfect I had the Unlimited HotSpot Calling added for $9.99 and I was regularly burning up 3000 mins a month on UMA!! I even took the 8320 Curve to New Zealand on a trip and enjoyed effectively fee calls and data every time I met a WIFI router!

Then last week all of a sudden it doesn't like connecting and staying connected to ANY WIFI router not at Starbucks, not at home and not at the office.

I have WiFi on and preferred and the bloody thing says that it is on and connected but still shows EDGE rather than UMA and and the little Icon is yellow. If I shut off the network, the uma does show up but just as "uma" rather than the usual "UMA"...

I am running:
8320 (EDGE, WiFi)
v4.5.0.124 (Platform 2.7.0.92)

Here is the Diagnostic report:

I have tried a battery pull, actually several, I have tried resetting a router, turning off the WiFi, renewing the host routing table with a restart, deleting the WiFi profile and all the other things i could think of...

Help!

Could you be missing a service book (for H@H)?

That looks like a T-Mobile problem.

First resend service books then call T-mobile if it doesn't work.

There are no service books required for UMA (H@H.) Usually this is a router issue. Does the device stillconnect automatically at Starbucks or TMobile Hotspots?

Also, do you have both certificates for UMA?

It started having the same problem with all the various routers I came into contact with at the same time. Starbucks the office and my home. So that may me think it wasn't a router issue.

Huh? Maybe that's the problem, where would I check them?

On with T-Mobile cust service now...

They have resent service books and told me to renew host routing tables (which I had already done).

Options >Security Options >Certificates. There's usually 2-4 certificates for TMobile.

On the home screen, does the WiFi logo look completely colored in? If not, that's a reason why UMA is not working.

John the T-Mobile BB specialist says it is a certificate problem too, and have told me to re-install the OS... I didn't tell them I was running a newer version (from here) than the one they have available.

1-Just for the heck of it, remove the SD card and turn off media support in the Menu. See what happens.
2- How soon after the upgrade did problem begin? You indicated about a week ago. What did you do (that you remember) about that time. New music? files? Upgraded some app?
3- Have read how the batteries last @ 12 months and you seem to rack up the WiFi connect time, thus draining the battery sooner than "normal", IMHO. Any chance of grabbing a "loaner" battery?
4 - Are you past warranty period?

Good luck. Be interesting to see how you solve situation.

Cameron,
When you wiped with JL and reinstalled older OS, did you also Remove Software in Windows? That 124 version may have left traces behind and hitched onboard again.

Also, the idea behind removing SD card is to make sure nothing got installed there that could be a factor.

Following this one. I've had some glitchy uma connection business lately. Thought I had it resolved, but no dice. I'm constantly connected via lowercase uma, never UMA as before.

It actually looks like there are several T-Mo 8320 users having this problem.

To answer a few of the questions:
Completely uninstalled all handheld software from the PC and then wiped the handheld.
Re-installed the T-Mo recomended OS 4.5.0.81
Exactly the same problem.
Upgraded to the latest version 4.5.0.124 which I have been running without any probs for 3 months since I installed in Jan 16th.

I have reset the routers, changed the channels, removed the SD cards changed the batteries, wiped and downgraded, upgraded, renewed routing tables, sent service books and I am one month out of my BlackBerry factory warranty... I am beginning to suspect that it is the WiFi hardware in the handheld that is at fault.

Default 8320 and wifi

I live in Dallas and have had the same problems at Krogers and the Detroit airport. Have spent hours on the phone with Tmobile and RIM. Sent diagnostics to RIM and they tell me its in the UMA of TMobile. So I call TMobile back. I'm still under warranty so I'm replacing the phone( tried getting an 8900 replacement but that went nowhere.)

Same problems though like you. Shows connected but still yellow on connection and wifi symbol greyed out. TMobile finally gave up and is sending another 8320. Let you know if that works. Don't have a problem connecting with home routers or other individuals routers at home. Just public places.

Lets hope for the best.

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

Are you doing a wifi hotspot login at the public networks?

I don't have any answers, but I just wanted to add that I am experiencing the same problem with a similar timing to cameron's. Right around Wed or Thurs of last week, the UMA functionality stopped working, after having successfully used it ever since I got the phone in Sept 2007. I don't think it's a HW issue. I did re-send the Service Books yesterday, and that did not help. I'm hoping this thread eventually provides some answers/solutions. Thanks all.

We are not alone!!

Another buddy of mine with a new BB flip phone running 4.6 OS was at Starbucks this morning. We checked his UMA connection and it only gets to "uma" rather than "UMA" and cannot use data!!

Default uma not UMA

I also have a BB Curve 8320, live in Denver. I am also experiencing the same issue and have been since last week. When connecting to any wifi network/router, the handheld connects to the router but only goes to uma and not UMA. Therefore not giving me full high speed connectivity. This is happening on any home network I try to connect to and even at a T-Mobile hotspot.

I contacted T-Mobile and currently have a trouble ticket open. They said this is a network issue and not my handheld. The ticket was opened on on 04-11-09 and was told to contact T-Mobile this Friday 04-17-09 for an updated status on the trouble ticket.
