Hey John,
I carefully followed your instructions, but UMA is not working on my torch.
Any suggestions?

Re: Get Your Unlocked 9800 Torch Working on TMobile with Browser, UMA and DM Tetherin
Hi John,
I have an unlocked Torch 9800 that I got in Jakarta. I'm in california, near LA, and I got a T-Mobile monthly plan with BB service.
When I got the phone set up, the Browser didn't work. I called T-Mobile Technical Support and they were not able to help. So I followed your instructions for the BIS Connection and BIS Browser, downloaded the T-Mobile service books and installed that. The Browser worked after that.
The problem now is, Blackberry Messenger stopped working. I lost the saved chats and groups, and now I can't send messages to my contacts. Thankfully my Contacts were wiped out.
Can you please help me?

Re: Get Your Unlocked 9800 Torch Working on TMobile with Browser, UMA and DM Tetherin
I've desperately tried all steps listed here plus deleted all service books and registered again, but I still cannot connect to BIS. Are there any other suggestions? Strange thing is before switching to TMobile I had my unlocked 9800 on MySimple mobile which uses TMobile 's network and had zero problems. I simply plugged in the sim card and everything worked. Now that I've switched to TMobile it's been a total nightmare! Please help!!!

You have a BB data plan with TMobile? You still need a data plan for this to work.

Re: Get Your Unlocked 9800 Torch Working on TMobile with Browser, UMA and DM Tetherin
If you used BIS with your previous carrier, did you specifically cancel the BIS service? Otherwise the IMEI and PIN are still registered with that carrier/service.

I thought this was the answer but I called my previous carrier and they verified not only that it wasn't on their network anymore but that when they looked it up or tried to re-add it, it showed up on another carrier's (TMobile) network.
I am really dreading this cause I am starting to think I might as well just buy an Android Blackberry-like phone, the ones w/Qwerty keyboards and form factors similar to the Bold.
I did all this because I wanted to port my old number to Google Voice and get a new number which I kept private. Now I've rendered my BB almost useless, and may end up having to buy a new phone,

Re: Get Your Unlocked 9800 Torch Working on TMobile with Browser, UMA and DM Tetherin
Well... After scouring the internet I found the suggestion that I call T-Mobile and ask that they escalate my case to RIM. Instead of calling I do it through online chat, and I'm given a number to call RIM. I call RIM and after several menus and a short wait I'm connected to someone who just tells me I have 3 options: 1)to go to Blackberry.com and search for answers; 2) be transferred to RIM tech support at a cost of $49.99; 3) Call T-Mobile and ask that they stay one the line and transfer me to RIM in which case tech support is free. Naturally I chose option 3.
I call T-Mobile for what must be the 10th time, not including the 5 online chats, and I am pretty ornery at this point. The customer service reps wants to take me through all the crap I've done at least 40 times, before she'll transfer me to RIM. Strange thing is this time it works! She had me verify the epc.tmobile.com was set in tcp, then pull battery and sim for 30 seconds. Since I'd done all this before I was more than disagreeable but as soon as my phone was on everything worked. Turns out they had something wrong in the setup on their side, she found it and no one else before her did. Naturally I was all thankful then and felt bad to have an attitude when I called. I wasn't rude but I'm sure she could tell my displeasure.
At any rate just wanted to say thanks to all that tried to help and to let you know my problem was resolved.

Re: Get Your Unlocked 9800 Torch Working on TMobile with Browser, UMA and DM Tetherin
I also forgot to ask... I know the differences between the GSM/3G radios of AT&T phones and T-Mobile phones... one is 1900 and the other is 2100... But I don't remember which is which. The 9800 can get into 1900 so I am wondering... Will the 9800 3G work on T-Mo? It really wouldn't matter too much because the areas I commonly peruse around only get T-Mo's 2G at best.... So I need Wi-Fi calling half the time XD. Which I understand that UMA is what does Wi-Fi Calling. So this guide is fitting.
Thank in advance..

No, the 9800's 3G will not work on T-Mobile.
However, if you want a 9860, I would order an unlocked one from Expansys that has the T-Mobile 3G bands.
