It's not COD controlled. Not entirely, because some COD files are coded for 105 ID triggers, but the major check and disable is in the Firmware file itself, not the OS. The firmware file is the sfi file. It's what gets executed when you see the RED LED on when you power the BB on. When the LED goes off the OS starts to boot. There's a 105 ID and 8830 model check that happens on Firmware execution which triggers a disable to API calls to the GPS chipset.
The phone status screen hows GPS as enabled because it is... for E911. It's the API calls that VZW has disabled. It's very possible that they have simply changed the memory address at which the varios API calls look for interaction with the GPS chipset. This alone would kill access to the chipset. Memory call relocation for instruction sets is a pretty easy thing to change at the firmware level.

intresting, i got to some codes, mainly api/clds or w/e it was but i lost my windows hdd with it, i'll play around with it if i get time, i still dont see even a modded sfi getting past the device tho, with out rim signing the file, and i doubt they will sign a sfi. i can be wrong.

Upgrade OS for Mac users
Would someone please let us Mac users know how to upgrade to the new OS?
A helpful, non-sarcastic reply, w/o reference to buying a PC, would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Agree with the above poster. You can't do it without windows or a windows environment as suggested above.

I installed the Verizon BB OS on my Bell 8830 and had numerous radio issues (poor reception, no data connection at times). All were resolved by backleveling to the Bell OS - Has anyone had a similar experience?

I got a new 8830 yesterday
Software is 4.2.2.66
I had done the update first week of August with my original phone which was replaced.
Has a newer theme looks smoother, rings better.

8830 Bought today...
...and it came with 4.2.2.148, directly from the Verizon store in Chicago on Michigan Ave...no 4.2.2.66....
The ringer on this thing SUCKS, and the lack of GPS is lame beyond words.
If the iphone guys can crack it to be used on other carriers, can't one of you studly techies get the memory address / GPS issue cracked?
Cheers...

Fortunatly, the BB is much more secure than the iPhone. I doubt you'll ever see the GPS "cracked." They locked it good. There are some threads here that explain how it's locked.

You likely got a device that's been on the shelf for a while at the store and just didn't get updated. No big deal, just update it using the instructions in the first post of this thread.

No, .66<.148. It's not like math (decimal), 66 is less then 148.

Opopps
Sorry you are right but I got the new handset swtiched Tues nite at the store and they said it had the latest software so that made me hesitate updating.
My previous 8830 I got August 1 and had constant complaints people said my voice was muffled sounding. The new one is fine and updated the software.
The software versions got confusing and the Verizon people I tyalked to know nothing.
