Default What is the final word on IM on 7100t: uses SMS or not?

Please Login to Remove!

Hey guys

Can someone please comment on this? Does the IM app always use SMS for messaging? And the $19.99 plan only comes with 300 SMS right? So would there be a way to make the 7100t use something other than SMS for IM so we don't rack up the bill?

Thanks for all your help. You guys rock!

it uses SMS, but you can make SMS go over GPRS in the Options. no worries there.

If you change your service plan to the "BlackBerry Minutes a& More" plan for $59.99 and you get:

- 1,000 Anytime minutes
- Unlimited data
- Unlimited SMS
- Unlimited email access

Not sure if this would fit you but it works for me - and, I really like the concept of not having to worry about SMS/data/etc. They also have the same plan but with more minutes (1,500) for $79.99.

The only drawback is there isn't unlimited nights & weekends (but that I don't do voice calls that much at night/weekends).

Thanks for the heads up guys:

Cant switch to that plan yet because I'm in a family plan until next year when the contract on my second line expires. I used to have the 1,000 min plan but changed when I got in the family plan. I'll guess for now I have to be careful on the SMS part

You can get unlimited SMS for $9.95 extra on an existing plan.

So SMS over GPRS isn't counted as a text message which is charge (5 cents each)?

It's important to note that inbound SMS are charged from the SMS bucket, even if you have "SMS over GPRS" selected. If you're doing IM, that counter climbs very quickly!

the IM app uses SMS, if you turn on the firewall you see it requesting stuff like:

sms connections to 4675
act as server for sms_send connections and sms_receive connections
and then an http connection to wirelessvillage.icq.t-mobile.com (sure its different for aim and Y!)
