T-Mobile to have 3G by Summer, Android handset by end of 2008 | The Boy Genius Report

Could this be just in time for the 8900 and/or 9000?

Fingers crossed. And wishing for super keyboard and no camera.

This could be a dumb question so forgive me if so, but when Tmobile releases this 3G network, does that mean that their phones will automatically work on that network? Or do Blackberries (or any cell phone for that matter) have to be a '3G' compatible phone to do so?

On another note - I have Verizon BB 8830, but am so terribly sick of Verizon's lack of phone selection that it drives me to go to someone else. That said, Verizon's coverage is amazing, but T-Mobile is usually just as good everywhere I go. Is speed (EVDO vs 3G) a major difference?

the device has to support the 3g frequencies that they use. there are currently 0 devices in existence that would support an American 3g on GSM

My T-Mobile 8700G and 8320 have always worked great anywhere in the Phoenix area. But when I was in Hartford, CT a few months ago, they could barely get a signal, and I experienced dropped calls for the first time in my life. My old Motorola E815 on Verizon worked flawlessly in both locations. Also, I don't know any of the technical details about EDGE vs EVDO vs 3G, but in my personal experience, my laptop tethered to the E815 on EVDO had a noticeably faster connection than when it's tethered to the T-Mobile phones now. So, I personally have had far better luck with Verizon. That being said, their prices are insanely high compared to T-Mobile's.

EDIT: realized you asked about EVDO vs 3G, not vs EDGE. I have no experience with 3G, so can't offer anything there.

EVDO is either 2.5 or 3g depending on whom you ask. its just "3g" for GSM isnt out yet. Its the UMTS/HSDPA version as opposed to EVDO. EVDO rev A/B is as fast as UMTS/HSDPA
