Default Multiple BES

I'm hearing rumors about companies using Blackberries without a BES. Does anyone know anything about this? I would need full functionality. (sync email, calander, etc.)
Right now I have a Domino BES with 65 users. We are starting another division and the powers that be have decided they want Exchange.
I guess my questions are:
Can we use Blackberries on Exchange without a BES?
Can I load an Exchange BES on the same hardware server as the Domino BES?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
