edge NOT EDGE (question's beat to hell; too many conflicting answers)

Hi all, my problems are listed above.
So, my basic problem is that no matter how hard I try, I cannot get the "edge" in the upper right corner to read as "EDGE" to access internet; however, in my "About" page, it DOES show up as:
"Blackberry 8100
smartphone (EDGE)
v4.5.0.55 (Platform 2.7.0.68)" ....etc etc.
Now the hardware details: BB 8100; v4.5.0.55; T-Mobile; Grandfathered, old FREE BB add on (supports BB Messenger at regular txt msg rate).
Now you know the details, fire away for suggestions please!

You say you have an old BB plan which supports BB messenger. I am not familiar with that sort of plan, however, IMHO, it is most likely your problem. You need a BB data plan. Lowercase "edge" means you have no connection to RIM data and servers.

Tmobile does have the "Feature Enabler" package, is that what you are talking about in regard to "Grandfathered, old FREE BB add on"?

On topic now, yes I do understand it probably is a problem on MY end. However, when the Pearl FIRST came out back in '06-07, there was an "introductory plan" that allowed basic use of messaging services but restricted use of email, internet, etc etc. It was an extremely crippled version of the messaging services with only very basic support for AIM and BBM. Yes. The FE allows MMS and a few other basic services. The plan allows for email, BBM, and everything else

Correct - Feature Enabler - which may no longer be available, allows for MMS and "EDGE", but no e-mail or browsing. There are reports that T-Mobile no longer offers the Feature Enabler.

The About section of your phone says EDGE because that's the capability of the phone (as opposed to something else like 3G). But this does not necessarily mean you'l get EDGE as well. As mentioned by an earlier post, you need to have a blackberry data plan (BIS) in order for it to show as EDGE (all uppercase). Given your current plan details, it seems normal for you to have edge (lowercase).

Just note, I do not have a proper data plan. My parents just upgraded my plan and I lost my grandfathered stuff today :(. Good news is I am now the proud owner of a new 9700...ARGH I really REALLY wanted to stay with the pearl series. Now I will look like I have a huge package...unfortunately I'm already taken on a permanent basis...
Good or bad? you decide? LOLOL. I'll still be around cause now, the Pearl will become my new dealer #...

Ok, I deserved that. But seriously my bad. Please let me rebuild myself and disregard for one bad decision on my part. I just bought my own phone today to use as a buisness line and I'm going to be using my 8520 which I will be paying for fully on my own as I am now working as an authorized resaler. Please juts disregard my offending posts as that was one bad mistake and I'm sorry again that I offeneded so many people on a respectable network.
In essence, give me another chance...
