When I called about this phone, the lady I spoke with said that she has not heard of the phone, but the computer says that it will be available to current Cingular and former ATT wireless customers (me). That is all she could currently tell me about the phone (no pricing, when available, etc.).

the screen of the phone is under plastic like the 7100. the resolution is alot nicer then the 7100 and there is super bright mode, for visiability in sunlight.

When you say "super bright mode", do you mean the backlight goes even BRIGHTER to remain visible in sunlight?

Or does it turn it completely off, like on the 7200 and 7500 series?

If it needs the backlight in the sunlight, that's retarded! There was nothing wrong with the TFTs from a year or 2 ago as far as visibility in sunlight goes.

BTW, I asked at my local Cingular corporate-owned store yesterday. Asked the store manager. He still hasn't been told anything about the release date for the 8700c. All he could tell me is "I've seen what it looks like". So, at this point, we know more here than people who work at Cingular's stores know! That's hilarious!

yes the screen goes even brighter in direct sunlight, because we are not dealing with the same low color lcd, u want beatifull, colorful, bright display at high resoultion, well thats where the super bright mode comes in, and i have to say it is fully usable without and problems, and automaticly switches the light modes depending on where you are. sounds kinda werid, but very cool and works very well.

the sensor for the light is rigth where the LED is. i figured it out after playing around enough. cover the LED and you will see it brighten up.

Shouldn't it be brighter when the LED is NOT covered?? If it was covered, that would mean it is dark out and the screen would not need to be as bright.

My Audi guages have the same function....really helpful when you go through a tunnel.

That's correct - That is the way the 8700 light sensor behaves. The original poster probably got confused. There is an approx 3 second filter for rapidly fluctuating light levels, so you have to cover for a moment before the gradually settles to its dimmer level.
