Sorry, all, I haven't posted sooner as I was verifying my claim.
Unfortunately, I have to report a bad news and confirm that you really can't have mail service (BIS/BES) without at least a basic dataplan on your GSM card.
What I post previously is correct. You can completely switch off the GSM connection and receive email via WIFI. However, The GSM card in the phone must at least connect ONCE with a network and verified it has a data plan for this to work.
I tried this scenario with two separate GSM SIM card, one with data plan, and one without.
- Start with a blackberry with a data plan, that synchronize properly.
- turn off Mobile Network.
- Shutdown blackberry.
- Insert SIM with (or without) dataplan
- turn on blackberry
- synch with only WIFI - failed
- turn on Mobile Network.
- turn off Mobile Network
- Synch with only Wifi
+ If the SIM card has dataplan:
- Service Status for BIS & BES switch to WIFI
- Email still works
+ if the SIM card has NO dataplan
- Service Status for BIS & BES remains "not coneected"
- Email refuse to work.
I think the issue is that the device REFUSE to switch the Service Status of the BIS and BES connection to WIFI unless it detected a data plan via its Mobile Connection. Once it does that, it will let you switch to WIFI forevermore, until you shutdown the phone.
Unfortunately, switching GSM card requires shutting down the phone.
So... Sorry everyone.
