Default Not Quad Band

I still don't get the reasoning for those here calling it "Quad - Band". Its not.

Its a DUAL Mode phone. GSM & CDMA. Quad means 4 bands in one mode/network. Either way GREAT news for those on BELL & TELUS.

Let the number porting wars begin.

4 = quad

The Global BlackBerry Data for me is the #1 reason I'll give up my 8703e & get the 8830 as I -

1. Need a North America (US & Canada) Voice Plan
2. Need instant (push) Global data access for my e-mails etc. without having to rely on a laptop, which stays plugged in my hotel/conference room.

Not having global voice at a cheaper rate does not bother me, as my voice calls while outside North America are minimal - family calls me at my hotel & if it's an emergency, then I sure don't want folks to mess with multiple phone numbers.

Here's my question though -
If my regular old 8703e is optioned with the Global BlackBerry Data plan, will I be able to access BlackBerry DATA in GSM areas of Europe/Asia (even though I cannot access voice)?

well considering the 8703e is a cdma device ... no you cannot get a gsm signal with it.. so no data.

Got it; I guess BlackBerry data is transmitted using either a CDMA or a GSM signal depending on carrier...
OK, thanks, was just curious, will have the 8830 in 2 weeks anyhow.

ya you got it.. in canada rogers is gsm, while telus/bell are cdma

so the device must support the standard of whatever carrier the bb was made for.
a cdma blackberrry cannot see a gsm signal as they are totally different bands/technology and vice versa.

Thax, midnight; question for you - seeing as Verizon offers a " unlimited world blackberry data plan" for $64.99, I would imagine Bell & Telus will offer a similar plan...
Any idea whether India, Singapore, Sri Lanka & Thailand use BlackBerry data on CDMA or GSM networks?
I will be in those countries come June, and that's part of the reason I'll get the 8830 come May 14th.
Any Bell/Cingular/Rogers/T-Mobile/Telus/Verizon BlackBerry users been able to use data in those countries succesfully? I think I heard a while back that CDMA is growing in those countries as well...wonder if the 8830 will display whether it's using CDMA or GSM at any given time...

well the nice thing about the 8800 is that it has the ability to use both cdma and gsm networks so as long as your telco has raoming agreements with the telcos out there it should work... that being said i have not been to those parts of the world dont know who verizon has agreements through...

i would think for sure the 8830 will tell you what network it is using (1x/EVDO/EDGE etc) and also you can probably go to the options->network section to see whos tower your connected to.

someone else who roams alot could maybe chime in to give their experiences.. as ive never done it and so what ive said is how it should work in theory

Are there any further updates on this?

I see Telus has "Coming Soon" on there website but nothing for Bell yet. Is this date still the current release date?
