Question BDM in a BES Environment

Please Login to Remove!

I just recently ( 2 days ago) installed BES 4.1.4 on a stand alone win2k3 server in an Exchange 2000 environment to service less than 10 users. The number of users will never really increase above 15 in its lifetime.

The question though is about Desktop Manager.

Our users will be using 7100i's on Nextel network and 8830's on Sprint's network.

Primary use is email and intranet access through the BB Browser. No device teathering for modem use is needed as all of my users have Sprint air cards.

My question is: Since the device OS can now be upgraded OTA, is there any reason to run BDM? I'm just trying to eliminate any excess work for myself.

As far as media transfer is concerned, being the only IT guy in the company, I'll probably be the only one usign that functionality.

On a side note: These forums helped out a hell of a lot getting my BES to work. From start to finish I didn't have ANY problems. I couldn't say that if I had not read these posts.

Thanks guys.

Device OS's CANNOT currently be upgraded OTA. However, provisioning, sync, and management can be done via wireless so no need for wires ... but if you wanna upgrade the OS you'll need to use some USB love.

Thanks hdawg,

I thought I remember seeing that you could.

OK then that leads to another question:

If I install BDM on my pc, can I update any one of my user's handhelds with it?

Also, is there any word on a time frame about being able to update the OS OTA?

Thanks

Yes, you can upgrade another handheld from your own PC. When you connect the device, you'll have to put in their device password (assuming you enforce password...and I hope you do) and then you'll get a message that your account is set up with one PIN number and do you want to switch to the other PIN number. Just say 'No' and you'll be able to upgrade the device no problem.

I do this all the time for my users.

I have mine prompt for an email profile but when it comes up I just hit "cancel" and it doesn't associate with any email account.

For doing other handheld upgrades for those on the same BES I simply create an email profile for them in Outlook. Then just have them enter their password for me when it prompts.

For the 7100i, never. For the 8830, when OS 4.3.x is released, maybe. As for the timeframe, late 2007/early 2008. The BES is capable as of 4.1.4, sort of (although with no compatible OS versions released, there's no way of testing it).
