Question BES 4.16 Performance questions

Please Login to Remove!

Hi everyone,

I am fairly new to this whole BES server, but i think i would ask for some gudiance and advise from other BES server admins. As title says, this is about performance in general on BES server.

Our environment is:
2003 AD domain
1 x Exchange 2003
1 x BES 4.1.6
2007 outlook clients

So we have some users that complain about messages not arriving quickly enough and up until now i only had pending messages i could see in BES admin window. We have now got our hands on a product called Mailscape for monitoring Exchange and BES server, and i saw this morning that we had 2 users with delayed notifications, and my research says that it is Exchange that cant send UDP packets quickly enough to BES so a user get in a delayed notification state. Now where do i need to troubleshoot this? exchange or BES server ?

pinging exchange server from BES server has 3ms response and so far it is only for a few users this is happening from.

Could size of mailbox on exchange play a role here as well ?

Regards
Ronnie

Yes, definitely.

Try using the messageflow.exe tool in the BlackBerry Resource Kit to get a closer look at what might be going on with message delivery for these users.

It's an excellent tool.

This is well embarrising... when trying to download the ressource kit i end up with besadminuserx etc.

i take it i dont need BlackBerry User Administration Tool v4.1.6 for Microsoft Exchange but this: Analysis, Monitoring & Troubleshooting Tools v4.1.6 (Exchange and Domino) ??

No need to be embarrassed, we've all had to start somewhere. Yes, you need the "Analysis, Monitoring & Troubleshooting Tools v4.1.6 (Exchange and Domino)". Also download the Admin Guide as it will tell you how to run messageflow.exe (there are a number of switches you can use)

tried it and so far no luck, here is my command and result:

C:\bb kit\MessageFlow>messageflow -p e -u all -L D:\RIM_LOGS_LIVE\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Logs\
BRK::ValidParams - Invalid parameter : Enterprise
BRK::ValidParams - Invalid parameter : Server\Logs\

Error: BRK::ValidParams - Exiting due to invalid parameter(s)

C:\bb kit\MessageFlow>

I can see that there is subfolders for each day, do i need to have that in the command too ?

so 2 more delayed notifications i see now. one has number 72 and another one 16 ... i just wonder where the issue is. and not sure which tool can tell me the issue and where

OK, try performing a Reload User on those with Delayed Notifications.

As for MessageFlow, I would copy the MAGT, DISP and ROUT logs to a temp directory and run messageflow against the copies, not the active logs.

Ideally, you don't want any rescans.
The rescan is typically the result of the failed UDP notify.

Is the latency between your Exchange server and BES always 3ms, or could there be times when the traffic is heavy and the latency jumps up?

How about Disk I/O on the Exchange server? Check to see if there's heavy disk i/o around the times that you have rescans.

Just done a quick ping again, from BES to EXCHANGE it is 9ms,1ms,1ms,1ms

I will have a look for DISK I/O during rescan periods.

Could it not be related to Out Of Coverage too?

in a 215 BB users organisation and i have 1 or 2 users with delayed notifications, is there any reason to be concerned ?

It could certainly be related to Out Of Coverage issues.

1 or 2 users out of 215 is nothing to be concerned about in my opinion.

Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help me. i ran MessageFlow.exe -p E -u ALL for log files yesterday (MAGT DISP ROUT)

and the output i got is a bit chocking..

for 211 BB users:

notify: 9137
rescan: 9662

I have not yet checked out of coverage, but that number seems fairly big to me of rescans.

My question is really that in the CSV file this command produces there is a few rows with not much information at all: (copy paste to excel and you can see missing fields)

Server User EntryID RefID AGT Tag Disp Tag Total Time Server Time Posted Mail Del/Sent Queue 1 Queue out Sending Disp Recv Router Recv Router Del Disp Del Agt Status Status time Retry CNT Discovery Path Pending Type

Is that normal in this report? this is my first ever run of this report, so cant really compare to anything.

I hope someone can help
