Default can i change an French Keyboard to a qwerty one?

Please Login to Remove!

I have a French torch with an azerty keyboard, which of course i do not want as i am not French!....I have ordered a qwerty keyboard and fancy my chances at switching them over, however, my question is how does the phone recognise a different keyboard layout?...any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

You can't.
Sure you can change the physical keyboard buttons, but the mapping of letters is hard-coded and cannot be changed.

You press Q on your newly installed keyboard, it will still show A

Are you sure about that? I'm not positive, but I *think* that the "coding" is built into the keyboard itself, and if you replace the keyboard it should work. Again, not certain on that, but I think that's how the hardware works.

You're incorrect.
Changing the keyboard will have no effect on the resulting characters being pressed.

OK, thanks. As an electrical engineer, I have to say that's a bad design. That means that the phones as built must be different for each keyboard type. Much cleaner and production-efficient to have ONE build, but with different keyboards. But of course, RIM didn't ask me.

Interesting problem. They keyboard is just plastic buttons on a ruber matrix with embedded contact rings. The grid underneath is pemanently part of the assembly. However, there are many hidden codes that blackberry has. Perhaps there's one to switch the ascII input assignments of the keys. You should ask @BlackBerryHelp on Twitter. They always answer.
