Default UMA when Roaming?

Please Login to Remove!

I'm currently in Spain (normally a US TMO customer). In the apartment I'm out I can get my phone to connect via UMA. When I make a call am i charged the roaming fee?

Thanks.

dont quote me, but i believe it is free if you have the hotspot calling. the calls are made over IP. i would call and comfirm just to be sure. but i am pretty sure you will be ok

If your BB says "TMobile - <network name>" and then says "UMA" in the corner then you will be charged for your calls just as if you were in the USA. So if you call a number in the USA your minutes will just be deducted from your regular minute plan. If you call a number in Spain it will be an internationakl call and a toll will apply. No need for the hotspot calling plan. The hotspot calling plan just gives you unlimited minutes over UMA.

While handoff won't work for you, I would still suggest turning off GSM while completing these calls. It'll prevent any chance of you actually being on the GSM network, thus preventing any chance of charges.

Also, be sure you've set all incoming calls to forward directly to voicemail if you are keeping the phone on GSM while out of the house. If you don't, any incoming calls will get charged even if you don't answer. If you haven't, you'll need to do that while on UMA so it is registered in T-Mobile's systems and not that of the provider you are roaming on.

So John, am I understanding this correctly? If I'm abroad and manage to find a Hot-Spot or UMA, then I can call the U.S. free?? But if I'm on home soil and in a Hot-Spot/UMA, any international calls are charged???

Huh, the TMO sales assoc sold me on the opposite theory....

I'm still a newbie and apparently gullible and my left thumb hurts....

Your phone needs to show T-Mobile in the screen as the carrier and UMA as your connection, just as it does in the states. At this point, T-Mobile treats your phone as if it was in the states. So yes, the call would be free if you had the @home service or hotspot whatever they call it. If you dont pay for the @home service, then calls are deducted from your plan minutes just as they are in the states.

But if I'm on home soil and in a Hot-Spot/UMA, any international calls are charged???
I dont know. I dont call Int or subscribe to the @home service. My guess is you would get charged for Int calling.

Calling from the states to international locations is the same as if you were on EDGE.

As a matter of habit, dial the calls as if you were in the US. Don't add the plus symbol. If for some reason you are sleeping at the wheel, you'll rarely complete the call and if you do you'll instantly know it is a wrong number.
