Hi, I will be getting a new phone next month, and am leaning towards the Pearl 8110, using AT&T. I will be one of those rare birds who does not use all of the features of the phone, with my only interests being the phone and GPS and maps.

I wanted to know if this phone, from AT&T, will let me load maps into it like a hand-held naviagator, and then allow me to find where I am on those maps using the GPS, without having to pay for an additional subscription for the Data service on top of the Phone service. Thanks.

You will need a Data Plan for maps, and they use lots of it.

There are a couple of no-data mapping options, look over in our GPS section, Sticky Note at top "All Known GPS Apps"

...why are you looking at purchasing a BB If GPS and phone are your only needs? Would be cheaper and easier on the eyes to buy a GPS unit and then a phone, no?

It depends on your GPS app -- not the BB itself. The GPS receiver on any BB is just a receiver that determines lat/lon. All other functionality is enabled by the GPS app you choose.

I am looking at getting the Pearl 8110 so that I do not have carry 2 devices, a phone and a navigator. It sounds like the app is the key. Can I load the 8110 from my PC? Apps, maps, and that kind of thing. Thanks again.

I am looking into what map apps I might be able to load in the 8110, that do not require me to be online with a data plan or internet. But I still have a question about the GPS. From what I read, the GPS function should be completely independent of my having a data plan, or connection to the internet, but I have had people tell me that (at least with AT&T) the GPS will not function without a data plan or the internet. Is the GPS independent, or not? Thanks again.
