Default Identity Crisis/OS upgrade problem

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

I just picked up an "unlocked Curve 8310" on eBay to replace my Pearl 8100. Just cracked open the box yesterday and it seemed to be brand new as described. This is where the problems started...

I'm on Rogers and wanted to get rid of the AT&T branding and move to the new 4.5 OS (from v4.2.2.166). The OS I grabbed is listed on the Rogers DL page for the "Blackberry Curve with GPS (as BlackBerry Curve 8310 Handheld Software 4.5.0.81 (Multilanguage)) and I grabbed DM 4.6 at the same time.

First I tried;

8310M_PBr4.5.0_rel108_PL2.7.0.78_A4.5.0.81_Rogers

and when that didn't work I wanted to see if I could flash the Rogers version of 4.2

8310M_PBr4[1].2.2_rel293_PL2.5.0.24_A4.2.2.163_Rogers_Wireless

I went through the stickies (e.g. xxx.blackberryforums.com/general-8300-series-discussion-curve/159564-latest-os-8310-4-5-0-134-4-5-0-99-multilanguage.html) and JC's 4.5 troubleshooting as well (xxx.blackberryforums.com/general-blackberry-discussion/159789-why-won-t-my-os-update-i-deleted-vendor-xml-file.html)

Nothing worked...all I keep getting is "No software update is required for your device."

BTW I tried flashing on Vista 32bit first (@ work) then on one of my home rigs (Vista 64bit) using the exact same OS'es and DM version files.

Incidentally, when I go to Options>About the info page says I have a Blackberry 8300 (not 8310)

BUT in Advanced options "GPS" is there. I thought there was no internal GPS receiver in the 8300 so WTH?

Any ideas?

TIA

It sounds like you have an 8300, not an 8310. Install the OS for the 8300. Just because "GPS" shows up in the Options page, doesn't mean it has GPS.

And if they said it was an 8310 and it's really an 8300, then you got ripped off on eBay because there is no GPS on an 8300.

If Options > About says 8300, you have an 8300. The GPS options is there for many models as a Bluetooth connection.

Get the 8300 OS download and you will be fine. Follow the direction again for the deletion of the vendor.xml file.

Good luck.

Thanks guys,

It even has the 8310 Titanium housing and has the GPS logo on the top and the Box and manual says 8310 which is another reason I was confused. I didn't want to believe someone would go to the trouble to swap motherboards. When I checked the RIM homepage for the Curve the 8300 was apparently only offered in Silver.

GRRR...eBay seller better take this back...I specifically bought an 8310 b/c I wanted the GPS.

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

Someone definitely scammed someone. Its easy to get housings these days. I have a red ATT 8310 housing I could put on my 8320 and nobody would know the difference until they looked in Options >About.

Here is the reply I just got back about the return - which will be happening thx to you guys =)

Its the first time I've had an issue like this on eBay over 9 years.

"Really?! Its so weird. But the phone is actually 8310 though. Maybe they didnt update the software? It never happened to me before as I sold so many 8310. But if you still want to return it, I am glad to take that back. Please let me know, thanks."

I know in your case it would have been next to impossible to tell what you were getting short of asking for a screenshot of the About screen, but if you decide to look on ebay again for a BB, just read this BBF faq first:

Buying a BlackBerry off eBay - BlackBerryFAQ

Good deals and honest sellers out there, you just have to be careful and ask questions first. Good luck with your return, hope it works out well for you!

Thx!

I'm just gonna get one from HorizonWireless instead of taking another chance with eBay

I look at this as a positive experience despite my bad luck. Without going through this issue I never would have stopped by here

Thanks again to all - you guys rock!
