Am considering an upgrade but I need 3g -will 8900 support 3g after software update ?

No. The 8900 is EDGE/WiFi only. Hardware, not software controlled.
The only 3G BlackBerrys for AT&T (Cingular doesn't exist anymore) are the 9000 and 9700.
