with the 8820 and wifi... what can you use the wifi for?
Can you download your email with wifi if you have poor coverage or no converage with edge / gprs?
I guess you can surf?
How are the apps installed going to take advantage of the wifi... ie pocketexpress?

There are lots of threads on the 8820, 8320, 8120 wifi devices coming out. You might need to do a little searching as most of it's been discussed already.

Yes you can get mail through wifi. I am on BIS through a UK provider and if I turn off my phone but have wifi on with access to the internet, email gets pushed to the BB 8820.

So you are saying that if you are not using the Blackberry data connection due to location that the WiFi portion takes it's place seamlessly? Do you have to log onto a site to do this or what. How about phone calls.

I simply can not see WiFi doing that much for me as in Jacksonville, I seem to have excellent coverage. I would not consider using my BB to cruise the internet when I have a 15" SVGA+ screen on my T60p Thinkpad. Doing the internet on the tiny screen on the 8820 would be reserved for emergency use only.

I do hope the increase what the browser can do for the people who DO use WiFi.

I am quite new to Blackberry and I don' know the mechanics of how it works but I was quite surprised to see email being pushed to me through wifi. I noticed it when I turned off the phone (Manage Connections -> Mobile Network -> OFF) and still got email notifications. I have just tried it again and can verify that email is still coming through. It is possbile it has something to do with my APN settings (Options -> Advanced Options -> TCP -> APN). I have it set to my mobile phone provider.

I can see one case where this might be an advantage. If your job took you to a company far away from home (eg. another state, country) and you worked in their offices for the day, and of course they had wifi, you could still get your email pushed to you without incurring any roaming GPRS costs. I don't know about the US, but in Europe roaming costs (both voice and data) are quite expensive.

You are right that using the browser on a BB is not going to match browsing the internet on a true laptop. However when traveling without a laptop the Blackberry comes in handy to view the odd web page here and there. Also since GPRS costs are quite expensive where I live, having the wifi means I can surf at certain places (ie. Starbucks, etc) much more cheaply.

Do not get me wrong. I like the internet being available on my BB. While boating around Jacksonville, I find it quite handy being able to pull up a full moving NEXRAD radar map of the area.

I am looking forward to the 8820 on Tuesday!

I am awaiting the 8820 on AT&T, the main reason I want the 8820 is for the WiFi.
My daily travels are fine, I have good coverage / signal everywhere I go...
But...
When I am in a few buildings and back at the home office in Kansas I have little to no reception inside thick concrete walls and or basement type offices.
These places all have extensive WiFi access I can get authorized on and this will help me get my e-mail while I am in these places a few hours a day a few days a week.
