I was reading the BES Handheld Management Guide and came across this section. I found it interesting and thought I would share it for those who might want to read it.

Data that is not backed up wirelessly (BES 4.0)
See post below for BES 4.1 details.

When handhelds are deployed wirelessly and wireless automatic backup is enabled for a user, the following handheld data is not backed up:

Messages - messages received on the handheld before the specified prepopulation date, located in folders not set for redirection, or that have message filters assigned to prevent redirection to the handheld

Content store - saved images and ring tones

Service books - all service books

Group addresses - group addresses created on the handheld are stored locally on the handheld only and are not synchronized

MMS messages - messages sent by MMS are stored locally on the handheld only

SMS messages - messages sent by SMS are stored locally on the handheld only

Saved messages - messages saved on the handheld

PIN messages - PIN messages are stored locally on the handheld only

RMS databases - third-party applications created in the J2ME™

Wirelessly downloaded third-party applications - third-party applications that are sent to handhelds wirelessly

Tip: Third-party applications can be restored to handhelds if the Delivery setting is set to Wireless

This one doesn't quite make sense to me.

If you wheel click a message and select Save it makes a copy and hides it somewhere. If you then delete the message you can still see it if you wheel click and select View Saved Messages. Can't think of a reason for it, but its there just in case

I know what saved messages are, and how to view them. What I don't get is why they are specifically not backed up to the BES server.

Ah, sorry about that. Probably too much of a pain to set up an archive system for each mail server's architecture? Where would they back them up to?

Database, just like everything else.

You're right its doable, but I don't think the BES configuration database is geared for storing mail files. And I doubt they're going to convince IBM to add room/tables to the Domino state or profile DB's. And I doubt Microsoft or Novell would play ball either. I guess what I'm saying is that this is a local feature with no functionality reciprocated in the overall architecture of the Mail Servers. But you could always put in a feature request, after all the squeeky wheel gets the grease.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. I didn't mean to draw so much attention away from whats getting left out of the wireless sync functionality. I will bookmark this under useful info.

The Saved Messages feature is one of those that is poorly documented and no one is really sure what it is actually there for.

Hey, sferical's got a point. This is from BB Manager help for 4.1. Now where in the world do those saved messages go...?

Thanks for including the BES 4.1 info jinksPadlock.

I imagine the REFID of the saved messages gets backed up to the database.

On a restore it will just pull the original messages from the messaging server according to the REFID's backed up and populate them to the BlackBerry.

hey,

The BES 4.1 does not back up group addresses as stated above.

Does this mean if I add a single contact to my blackberry address book it is not backed up anywhere?

Say for example, I lose my blackberry will I also lose my contacts? (assuming my blackberry is not setup to sync with outlook)

Yes you will lose your contacts.

And the saved messages should be stored in the database, probably in the SyncBackupRestore table.
