I set my BB9900 to do a softwear update today via the handset, it has been stuck on 16% for the last 4 hours. I have removed the battery in the hopes it would jump start something but when I reconnected still the same... is this normal?? please help.

Your dependent on the cell netowrk to do the download. It's always better to download the files and do it on a PC

I have NEVER had an update through the handset go well. Fortunately you can probably recover it by updating via pc.
