Here are some more dollars and cents: AT&T + VZW + T-Mobile + Sprint + all the other regional and smaller carriers would have equaled more units for Apple, but that hasn't prevented the iPhone from being a success. You also make far too many assumptions about VZW and their credit standards. As to the issue of exclusivity, it's not like the 5-year deal that Apple signed with AT&T, and given the time frame between GSM and CDMA releases, it is almost as if the GSM carriers have a time-sensitive exclusivity with near every release.
