Perhaps it's because most users here don't use WhatsApp. I know I don't. My plan on Verizon includes unlimited messaging.
Low internal memory often causes the deletion of messages. Checking free memory would be a good start, as well as making sure all your media is on a micro-sd card and not in the device's internal memory.
