I tried right clicking the tree like you suggested, as you can see the activate button is not clickable.
These are my steps in my attempt:
1. open JDE
2. create new empty workspace labed "HelloBlackBerry"
3. create new empty project labeled "HelloBlackBerry"
Here is the screen with some options which I do not check:

4. create new java file named "HelloBlackBerry"
5. Then I paste in the code.
6.I press save
7. I press build selected
8. I press build all and run

I do all of these steps exactly after I install JDE 4.1.0 and the latest JAVA sdk with all the default settings on Windows XP Professional.

What am I doing wrong that I don't get the same results as you do?
I have also tried repeating those steps except checking the "make this project active always" option, it still doesn't work...
