Just to help out, I was helping a friend move into a new place today and stole some free WiFi from whomever was broadcasting it - complete random open connection, I hooked right up without any problems and was off and gmailing, browsing, etc. The two (new) roomates mentioned that the free wifi I found was what they used, it was better than the one they pay for!
