Look at the link in post 3. This has been discussed before. As you stated, you can insert whatever size card you would like in the device, however if your OS does not support that size, you will not be able to use the entire card.
For example, you're running a device on OS 4.2.2 and you place an 8 gig card in the device. The phone will only see 4 gig available and format it as a 4 gig card.
