I had a friend who did some private flying. Although he said it didn't totally block anything out you could definately tell if their was a cell phone/blackberry on. Just to be safe always turn the wireless off. I've only had one airline that made me completely power the device down. Most are ok with you leaving the device on and just turning the wireless off. If they ask you to completely power it down then do so. It isn't worth getting kicked off your flight.
