Thanks. While the answer doesn't make me any the wiser, it does at least give me explanations that start to make a kind of sense.
I guess the lack of interest in Today themes probably says something about the relationship between theme users and the way they use the actual device. It makes sense in the context of the descriptions of themes I've read.
If I've got it right, the people who spend a lot of time worrying about having the right cool themes are probably not the ones who just see the device as a working tool. In my case a different theme would be fun, but having my schedule in front of me is a much higher priority.
And now I can go on and seek answers for the other things that puzzle me.
