Having the phone locked or in stand by avoid it from accesing to the GPS data. The same happens to Google Maps, if you have a GPS location and you lock the phone you will see as soon as you unlocked it it will be in cell location mode.
So I recommend not locking the phone though I know sometimes that's a must.

I used this apps the day before yesterday to save my car location while I was doing a walk around downtown and I worked great when I wanted to go back to the car.
