On the cursor speed, look in device options. Maybe the icon looks like a wrench, or gears or something similar. Look in screen/keyboard, and adjust the sensitivity.
On the apps, you are going to have a rough time. You can't download and install anything over the air (OTA) without a blackberry data service plan. You are going to have to find or make desktop downloads and install that way. I can't be much help on that question.
