That's because you aren't connected to the BlackBerry infrastructure when the symbol is gray.

If you have no data issues when
not connected to Wi-Fi, and only have issues when you
are connected to Wi-Fi, then my first thought is that this is a router issue.
Since I don't have a 9700, I don't know for sure. Do you know if anyone else is having this issue?
