I had prove it by cache-ing the island of OAHU at all zoom level in BBmap, pull out the sim card, insert the battery and start up the phone, and is work just like a stand alone GPS, like tom tom garmin etc...

And the cache size is 486.4 kB

In order to put it to the BBmap cache, you just need to scroll around, zoom in or out and it will save it, dunno what is the size limit.

And I believe it work the same way in googlemap.
